Former Attorney General Abubakar Malami has entered the 2027 Kebbi governorship race, picking up the African Democratic Congress, ADC, nomination form and launching a scathing critique of the state government.
Malami announced the move on Saturday via his social media platforms, saying he could no longer stay silent as residents contend with insecurity, poverty, and deteriorating public services.
“Kebbi State is currently facing severe governance and humanitarian challenges,” he said, citing what he described as failing healthcare, collapsing education, and persistent bandit attacks.
The former minister backed his claims with statistics.
He alleged that more than 67% of children aged 6 to 15 were out of school, while over 88% lived in multidimensional poverty.
Healthcare, he said, was in crisis, with high maternal mortality in rural areas due to poor access to antenatal and essential services.
On security, Malami said repeated attacks by bandits and kidnappers had forced farmers off their land and left businesses operating in fear.
He accused the current administration of misplaced priorities, declaring a “State of Emergency on Misgovernance” in Kebbi.
If elected in 2027, Malami said his focus would be security, education, healthcare, agriculture, and youth empowerment. He framed his campaign around accountability, service delivery, and sustainable development.
“The era of ineffective leadership and political propaganda must come to an end,” he said, appealing to Kebbi residents to join what he called a mission to rebuild the state and restore prosperity.
“There will be no retreat and no surrender in the collective struggle to rescue our state,” he declared.
Malami served as Attorney General and Minister of Justice under former President Muhammadu Buhari from 2015 to 2023.
