Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has declared that he would step aside for any other candidate, including former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, in the race for the presidency if they emerge as winners.
Abubakar made the declaration in an exclusive interview on Arise TV on Wednesday, when he was pressed on whether he would concede to Obi if it came down to a single opposition ticket.
“I will step aside for any winner,” he said plainly, when asked point-blank to answer yes or no.
Pushed further on whether that commitment extended specifically to Obi, his former vice-presidential running mate, Atiku answered: “Of course.
“If he is a contender, why not?”
When the interviewer suggested that Obi’s prior role as his running mate might make such a concession difficult, Atiku dismissed the notion.
He said: “Why is it difficult there?
“I don’t know.
“It’s either you go through democracy or you go through consensus,” he said.
Abubakar had earlier said the 2027 presidential election may be his final attempt to contest for elections. Police officer arrested after killing fuel attendant in Kontagora
A serving Mobile Police officer has been arrested in connection with an armed robbery at a filling station in Kontagora Local Government Area of Niger State.
The incident left a 20-year-old fuel attendant dead.
Security sources said the incident occurred about 2:40 p.m. on April 15, 2026, when police received a distress call reporting an armed robbery at Garun Mallam Filling Station, behind BCG Garage, Kontagora.
According to the sources, two armed suspects — one dressed in a mobile police uniform — arrived at the station on a motorcycle and demanded money from the attendant after purchasing fuel.
When the attendant, identified as Jibrin Inuwa, resisted, one of the suspects shot him in the chest and fled with an undisclosed sum of money.
Inuwa was rushed to the General Hospital, Kontagora, where he was pronounced dead.
His remains were subsequently released to his family for burial according to Islamic rites.
Patrol teams from ‘A’ Division Kontagora, led by the Divisional Police Officer, immediately gave chase and tracked the suspects to the Dadinkowa area behind a vigilante office, where a gun duel ensued.
One suspect was overpowered, shot in the leg, disarmed, and arrested.
The suspect was subsequently identified as Inspector Jido Ahmed, a serving officer with 61 PMF Kontagora, currently on special duty in Agwara.
He was treated at the General Hospital, Kontagora, before being referred to the Police Clinic in Minna. An AK-47 rifle — serial number 38262 — and 12 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition were recovered from him.
The Niger State Police Command said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the second fleeing suspect as investigation into the case continued. Tinubu is not imposing his view on NWC, compelling governors — Yilwatda
El Salvador publishes law allowing life sentences for minors as young as 12
National leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu is imposing his views on the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party and or on governors.
The ruling party NWC also described the recently concluded national convention of the opposition coalition party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a beer parlour gathering.
Speaking at a world conference in Abuja yesterday, the national leadership argued that the opposition party is clearly running against the court judgment in conducting the convention, stressing it will come to nothing.
“The Supreme Court ruled recently on the case but what the ADC did organising a convention was clearly against the judgment of the court but they decided to go ahead with what I will call beer parlour gathering.
“The problem with the so-called coalition party is that it is infested with virus members. Any political party that does not respect its ideology is bound to continue having challenges. The problem with the ADC is that it does not respect its ideology,” Basiru noted.
Both the National Chairman, Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, and the National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, who addressed myriads of issues, argued that President Tinubu has given listening ears to the party’s leadership and the governors.
They dismissed the impression that the ruling party is jittery ahead of the forthcoming presidential election particularly over votes from the North-West, insisting that the political structures of both Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Mallam Nasir El-Rufai in Kano and Kaduna have been weakened completely.
“The Ganduje bloc is still very intact apart from our party’s governorship candidate in the 2023 election. We currently have two Senators and the other blocks don’t have a single House of Representatives member which leaves the Kwankwaso political blocks vulnerable. The entire political structures of Kwankwaso and that of the El-Rufai have been weakened to compete against the APC. I can tell you that the APC will win more votes in the North-West in next year’s presidential election than ever before,” Yilwatda boasted.
He specifically warned that the party will not guarantee automatic tickets to any member contrary to claims that the ruling party is planning for a consensus option.
On the status of the membership of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, Yilwatda said he was free to join the APC but noted that nobody will compel him. (The Sun)
