Former National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, Executive, Prof. Usman Yusuf, has warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that he needs the endorsement of God and the Nigerian people to win in 2027.
He said even if all 36 state governors defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, that was not a guaranty that he would win re-election.
Yusuf shared his thoughts on the recent political moves in Nigeria, including the defection of the Zamfara governor to the All Progressives Congress (APC), during an interview on Trust TV.
With the latest defection of Gov Lawal, the APC now has 31 governors. There are 36 governors in Nigeria.
Yusuf explained that many governors and politicians joined the APC because they believed their future depended on the party and its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.
He warned, however, that even if all 36 state governors were to join the APC, it would not guarantee a win for Tinubu in the 2027 election.
According to Yusuf, winning an election was not just about numbers or political power; it required the endorsement of two major people.
“Firstly, the support of the people and, importantly, the blessing of God,” he said.
He stressed that the current situation in the country, marked by issues like corruption, hunger, and violence, showed that God would not approve of using force or political pressure to achieve victory.
Yusuf also criticised the way politicians were lured by money and promises.
He pointed out that “some governors see offers of billions as personal rewards for their loyalty.”
He stated: “Mr. President, if they are not telling you, even if all 36 governors in the country decamp to APC, they won’t show you a victory in 2027. You need the endorsement of two. The endorsement of the people, which Mr. President you don’t have, and the God Almighty.”
