A few weeks to the general elections, the Senate, on Tuesday, declared that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had no excuse to give not to deliver credible polls.
The upper legislative chamber disclosed that funds and materials needed for smooth conduct of the elections had been provided by the executive in collaboration with the legislature.
It therefore said that it believed that the electoral umpire should not give excuse(s) not to deliver.
Speaking during the resumption of plenary after the Christmas and New Year break by lawmakers, the Senate President, Dr Ahmad Lawan charged INEC to be on top of its game.
He charged the Commission to ensure that the general elections met the expectations of Nigerians.
“INEC has got everything it had asked for, from the legislature to aid the conduct of a credible election and as such excuses will not be condoned,” he said.
Lawan added that security agencies had assured everyone that the environment would be safe and secured for citizens to go out and cast their votes without any hindrance.
He, however, assured Nigerians and stakeholders that the National Assembly was ever ready to support INEC and other federal government agencies that would work to ensure free, fair and credible elections in the country.
The Senate President, therefore, urged Nigerians to leverage the window of collection of Permanent Voter Cards, PVC, as provided by INEC to collect them for exercise of their franchise.
He said: “2023 will redefine the future of the country as Nigerians prepare to elect public officers to the various positions both in the National and state levels.”
