The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has debunked claims linking its officers to a viral video showing uniformed personnel allegedly scooping fuel from the wreckage of an overturned tanker.
The video, which has circulated widely on social media, has drawn criticism and raised concerns about the conduct of security forces in Nigeria.
In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the NPF clarified that the individuals depicted in the footage are not members of the Nigeria Police Force.
Instead, they are uniformed personnel from a neighbouring francophone country whose camouflage uniforms bear a superficial resemblance to those worn by Nigerian police officers.
“The officers captured in the video were speaking in French, not in any Nigerian language or in English,” Adejobi explained.
“This crucial detail further confirms that they are not affiliated with the Nigeria Police Force.
The NPF condemned the dissemination of the misleading video, describing it as an attempt to discredit the force and tarnish its reputation.
“We strongly denounce the spread of unverified information aimed at undermining the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force,” Adejobi stated.
“This type of disinformation erodes public trust and has far-reaching negative consequences for national security and cohesion.”
The police spokesperson emphasized the critical role of accurate and responsible information sharing, especially in a digital age where misinformation can spread rapidly.
He urged Nigerians to exercise caution, verify the authenticity of content before sharing it, and refrain from contributing to the spread of false narratives.
ACP Adejobi reaffirmed the NPF’s commitment to professionalism, discipline, and the safety of all Nigerians under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
He highlighted ongoing efforts to improve transparency, accountability, and the overall image of the police force.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens,” he said. “Acts that compromise the reputation and integrity of the force are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
The NPF appealed to the public to support efforts aimed at fostering national unity and strengthening trust in institutions responsible for maintaining law and order. “As citizens, we all have a role to play in preserving the credibility of our institutions,” Adejobi concluded.
“By verifying information before sharing it, we can collectively contribute to a safer, more unified Nigeria.”
The police spokesperson also assured Nigerians that the NPF would continue to monitor and address any attempts to spread false or misleading information about the force, while taking necessary actions to protect its image and integrity.
