Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum, on Friday said Mexico had received almost 11,000 deported migrants from the United States since January 20 when President Donald Trump took office.
Sheinbaum said the figure included about 2,500 non-Mexicans.
Sheinbaum, earlier this week, reached a deal with Trump to pause threatened tariffs on Mexican goods in exchange for deploying thousands of National Guard police to the country’s northern border with the United States in a bid to further reduce the flow of U.S.-bound migrants.
The Mexican president, while speaking at her regular morning press conference, added that Mexico had also repatriated deported migrants to Honduras via flights as well as ground transportation.
She, however, emphasized that the repatriations were not forced.
“It’s voluntary. We will accompany them so they can go to their home countries,” she said.
