Troops from the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, in collaboration with other security agencies, have intensified their efforts against economic saboteurs in the Niger Delta Region (NDR), leading to significant successes between December 23 and 29, 2024. Over 90,000 litres of stolen products were recovered, and 20 illegal refining sites were dismantled.
The operation resulted in the arrest of 8 suspected oil thieves, the deactivation of 21 criminal boats, and the seizure of over 90,000 litres of stolen crude and refined products. Notable achievements include the discovery of a massive storage site and a boat with 37,000 litres of stolen condensates in the Buguma area of Asari-Toru LGA.
At Ogajiama, another major criminal site was dismantled, resulting in the seizure of 9,000 litres of illegally refined kerosene and the arrest of three suspects.
Troops also intercepted significant quantities of stolen products across various local government areas, including about 10,000 litres of stolen products from multiple illegal refining sites in the Imo River area and the confiscation of 8,000 litres in Bayelsa State’s Biseni Forest.
In Akwa Ibom State, 11 drums containing 3,080 litres of stolen fuel were intercepted, leading to the discovery of a smuggling ring.
Major General Jamal Abdussalam, General Officer Commanding the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, urged troops to maintain vigilance and continue their efforts in denying criminals the freedom to operate in the region, while encouraging the local population to provide intelligence to assist the operations.
