Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has initiated a review of salary packages for political, public, and judicial office holders across Nigeria.
This was contained in a statement released by the Head of the Information and Public Relations Unit at RMAFC, Mrs. Maryam Yusuf in Abuja on Thursday.
Speaking at a retreat organised by the commission in Kano, Mr. Mohammed Usman, Chairman of the RMAFC’s Remuneration and Monetisation Committee, emphasised the significance of this initiative for strengthening Nigeria’s governance framework.
“This review is a pivotal step toward fulfilling one of the commission’s core mandates,” Usman stated, highlighting the goal of aligning remuneration with current economic realities.
Usman noted that the 1999 Constitution, as amended, granted RMAFC the authority to set appropriate compensation for office holders at all government levels.
He explained that the commission had been proactive, incorporating stakeholder memoranda, public hearings, ministerial submissions, and international remuneration benchmarks into the process.
“Our approach considers not just numbers but also sustainability and affordability,” Usman said, stressing the need for a balanced and realistic framework.
The committee has been tasked with consolidating previous reports and addendums into a unified document to guide implementation.
Usman urged committee members to leverage their expertise, stating, “This retreat is an opportunity to create a fair and sustainable remuneration structure that benefits all stakeholders.”
The RMAFC’s efforts are expected to produce a comprehensive framework that ensures equitable and economically viable compensation for Nigeria’s office holders, in line with the commission’s mandate.
