Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has taken decisive steps to restructure governance across the state’s tertiary institutions and healthcare sector.
The governor has dissolved the governor councils of all state-owned tertiary institutions and approved the disengagement of management staff at Edo Specialist Hospital and Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin City, with immediate effect.
In a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, the directive was detailed in a government announcement dated November 20, 2024, and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor.
The move is part of the Governor’s broader efforts to improve efficiency, accountability, and service delivery in critical sectors of the state.
The statement instructed all affected members of the Governing Councils to hand over government property in their possession to the heads of their respective institutions. Similarly, management staff of the two hospitals are required to transfer their responsibilities and any government assets under their care to the most senior officers within their organizations.
This decision underscores the administration’s commitment to ensuring effective leadership and governance in state institutions.
While no specific reasons were given for the dissolution and disengagement, the Governor’s actions reflect a focus on restructuring and addressing perceived inefficiencies in these institutions.
Governor Okpebholo’s administration has been keen on driving reforms across various sectors to align with its vision of delivering quality services to Edo residents. Observers view this latest development as a significant step in addressing governance challenges and improving public trust in state institutions.
