Nigeria’s crude oil production declined in August 2025, falling short of the output quota set by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
According to OPEC’s Monthly Oil Market Report (MOMR) released in Vienna on Friday, September 12, 2025, Nigeria pumped 1.43 million barrels per day (mbpd) in August, down from 1.50 mbpd in July. The figure represents a 4.4 percent drop in output and marks the first time since May that the country has missed its production target.
The report, which was based on direct communication with Nigerian authorities, showed that the country’s August output fell below its assigned quota of 1.5 mbpd. Despite the setback, Nigeria maintained its position as Africa’s top producer, ahead of Libya, which produced 1.38 mbpd.

OPEC also cited data from secondary sources, which put Nigeria’s production slightly higher at 1.54 mbpd in August, compared to 1.55 mbpd in July, representing a marginal 0.15 percent decline.
On a broader scale, the cartel said crude oil production across its members averaged 42.40 mbpd in August, reflecting an increase of 509,000 barrels per day month-on-month.
