The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed that it adhered to a balanced approach of due process and compassion in the recent arraignment of 76 individuals on charges including terrorism, arson, and treasonable felony, related to the destruction of public property and threats to national security.
In a statement from ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer at Force Headquarters in Abuja, the NPF reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law, ensuring due process, and respecting the rights of all suspects.
The suspects were initially presented in court where formal charges were filed, and a court-ordered remand was issued.
ACP Adejobi highlighted that throughout the detention and arraignment process, the NPF adhered strictly to legal provisions, maintaining fairness and ensuring that the basic rights of the accused were respected, including access to medical care and other essential needs.
He said during the proceedings, an incident occurred in which six suspects unexpectedly rushed out and fainted, drawing considerable media attention. Medical assistance was promptly provided, underscoring the Police Force’s commitment to the welfare of individuals in custody, regardless of the nature of the charges.
The NPF also addressed public concerns regarding younger detainees, underscoring that under Nigerian law, individuals are accountable for their actions upon reaching the age of criminal responsibility.
This stance aligns with global practices, such as those in the United Kingdom, where young persons involved in serious offenses face appropriate legal consequences under human rights standards.
Recognizing the significant public interest in this case, the Nigeria Police Force has pledged to maintain professionalism and transparency throughout the legal proceedings.
The NPF encourages the public to consider the case without undue bias, as the Force remains steadfast in upholding justice and human dignity.
