The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has slammed her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa, for alleged political comedy.
She accused Obasa of turning lawmaking into comedy.
Meranda said that his decision to sit with three other lawmakers was an act of drama that was both comical and tragic in form and content.
In the first direct attack on Obasa, the speaker also condemned his invasion of her office as unbecoming.
Meranda spoke to newsmen on the premises of the Lagos State High Court on Friday.
The suit filed by Obasa challenging his removal from office came up for hearing.
All House members stormed the court with a majority of them about 31 in support of Meranda.
The court has ruled that all members of the house should be joined as respondents in the suit.
When asked about the ongoing legal battle, she responded, “Well, good morning. This is actually just the beginning, and just like what happened in there, both parties actually have their representatives. I think we should allow the legal teams to do their job.”
Meranda acknowledged that Obasa, as a current lawmaker, had the right to visit the Assembly.
However, she condemned his decision to break into her office.
“I think he’s still a member of the House of Assembly, so he has every right to come, but invasion and breaking into my office—that is really a big one,” she said.
Meranda also addressed the withdrawal of her security personnel on Thursday.
Despite the situation, she said that she was not worried about her safety.
“Well, as you can see, I have my people here with me, and God is with me,” she said.
When questioned further, she said that her security detail had been significantly reduced.
“Well, I have, I think, three or four policemen, whereas my normal convoy consists of 12 policemen, four DSS operatives, and two anti-B personnel. As of this morning, I don’t have that.”
Obasa had claimed to have held a plenary session on Thursday.
However, Meranda dismissed this claim, stating that it did not meet the required legislative standards.
“I think to me, that was just a show of shame, because in our job, we have numbers that form a quorum. So if you are sitting with three or four members, you are only doing theatre,” she remarked.
