Some ministers, including Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Shamsuna Ahned and the Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Prince Clem Ikanade Agba, have also tested negative for the virus.
While the governor’s acting Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, said in a statement that the test result was obtained on Thursday from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC)-accredited laboratory at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Edo State, Minister Zainab Ahmed took to her twitter handle to announce the results of her test together with Agba’s.
According to Diri’s press Secretary, “The result showed that Governor Douye Diri had no evidence of COVID-19 infection.”
Officials of the epidemiology unit of the state Ministry of Health led by the State Epidemiologist, Ifiemi Iwuji, had on Wednesday conducted the test and the samples sent to the Irrua Specialist Hospital.
Before the governor opted for the test, he had been inundated with phone calls and messages following speculations on the social media that he might have been infected.
This was fuelled by his sitting next to a North East state governor, who later tested positive for the virus, during the last National Economic Council (NEC) meeting at the State House, Abuja, on March 19.
The governor was quoted to have said: “I had to take the test so as to douse the tension and end all the speculation. Besides, I needed to know my status concerning the COVID-19. I am therefore thankful to God that the result was negative as I anticipated.”
Meanwhile, the two ministers overseeing Nigeria’s ministry of Finance on Thursday tested negative for the deadly Coronavirus pandemic.
Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning and Clement Agba, Minister of State, Budget and National Planning both tested negative for Coronavirus on Thursday.
According to Ahmed, on her twitter account, “I am grateful for negative #Covid19 test results & appreciate your concerns & prayers.
“I urge all of us to practice social distancing, wash our hands & use sanitizers as frequently as possible to help put an end to this global pandemic. Please support by following guidelines.”
Agba also confirmed his test result on his verified twitter handle, harped on compliance with the protocol of handwashing, use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer and social distancing.
He prayed that the global pandemic would pass quickly.
