The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has expressed strong disapproval over alleged cases of extortion and high-handedness involving some officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

In a statement, Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said the IGP addressed these concerns during a recent conference with Assistant Inspectors-General, ⁷lCommissioners of Police, and heads of police formations at the Goodluck Jonathan International Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

IGP Egbetokun emphasized the importance of proper supervision and urged senior officers to ensure their subordinates uphold the highest standards of professional conduct while executing their duties.

He also directed the IGP X-Squad, Monitoring Unit, and Complaint Response Unit (CRU) to conduct routine checks on officers nationwide to curb misconduct and corruption.

He warned that officers involved in unethical behaviour would face strict disciplinary action, including supervisory officers held accountable for the actions of their subordinates.

The IGP specifically condemned the practice of officers name-dropping senior police officials, including himself, to extort the public.

He reassured Nigerians that any officer found guilty of such activities would face severe punishment, reiterating the Force’s zero-tolerance policy for corruption and misconduct.

He also urged the public to report any instances where his name is used for fraudulent purposes, stressing the importance of citizen cooperation in maintaining accountability within the police force.
