Speaking during the 2025 Olympic Day celebration in Yenagoa, represented by his Technical Adviser on Sports, Mr. Alaowei Opukeme, Diri emphasized that his Prosperity Administration is fully committed to ensuring Bayelsa excels among Nigeria’s states through strategic investments in sports.

Highlighting sports as a vital avenue for youth empowerment, the governor pointed to Bayelsa’s recent achievements as evidence of his administration’s focus on the sector.
He noted that the Olympic Day Run reflects the state’s cultural diversity and sporting excellence, aligning with values of friendship and respect cherished by Bayelsans. This year’s theme, “Move, Learn, Discover, Together for a Better World,” he said, encourages active participation in building a better society through sports.

Mrs. Emem Edem, representing Nigeria Olympic Committee President Engr. Habu Gumel, underscored sports’ role in enhancing physical and mental well-being while fostering unity across diverse communities.
She described the Olympic Day Run as a global symbol of solidarity.
In his welcome address, Sir Braveman Wodi, Director of Sports at the Bayelsa State Sports Council, emphasized that the event promotes health and fitness through activities like jogging and walking, which help burn calories, tone muscles, and reduce stress.
He clarified that Olympic Day is not about competition but about embracing exercise as a way of life.Wodi expressed delight at the impressive turnout for this year’s event, which he said underscored its significance.
He also commended athletes, coaches, and organizers for their dedication during the recent National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, noting their efforts reflect Governor Diri’s passion for sports.
The 2025 Olympic Day celebration concluded with sports demonstrations and a walk from Ekeki Park to Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa.
