Gov. Diri lauds NYSC as pillar of national unity

Bayelsa State Governor, Sen. Douye Diri has hailed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as a cornerstone of national identity, emphasising its role in fostering unity and shared values among Nigeria’s diverse population.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony for the 2025 Batch B, Stream 1 Corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Boro Town, Gov. Diri, represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Hon. Alfred Kemepado Nimizigha, urged the corps members to embrace the legacy of the NYSC and contribute meaningfully to its objectives.

“As you begin your journey in this distinguished programme, I encourage you to seize the privilege of shaping this legacy and making it your own,” Diri said.

He invited the corps members to explore legitimate opportunities in Bayelsa, highlighting the state’s hospitality and wealth of prospects.

“Your time here is not just about service; it is about personal growth and seizing possibilities,” he added.

The governor emphasized the importance of discipline, urging corps members to adhere to camp rules to ensure a productive and enjoyable experience.

He advised them to focus on meaningful pursuits, warning against distractions that could derail their future aspirations. “Stay calm, stay focused, and success will come in due course,” he said.

Diri reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving facilities at the orientation camp and ensuring the safety and security of corps members throughout their service year.

“Wherever you are posted, we have taken adequate measures to ensure your peace and security,” he assured.

He also commended the NYSC leadership and staff for their dedication to instilling values of integrity, patriotism, and service, which he described as vital for fostering national unity and pride.

The governor concluded by wishing the corps members success, good health, and prosperity, assuring them that their NYSC experience would shape their character and provide lifelong lessons.

In her welcome address, NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs. Okpalifo Obiageli Charity, outlined the objectives of the orientation course and urged corps members to approach their service year with seriousness.

She cautioned against social vices and actions that could tarnish the scheme’s reputation, both during the orientation and at their places of primary assignment.

Mrs. Okpalifo expressed gratitude to Gov. Diri for his continued support for the NYSC in Bayelsa, noting that his contributions have been instrumental to the scheme’s success in the state.
