In a bid to enhance road safety across Nigeria, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has called on traditional rulers to play a pivotal role in reducing road traffic crashes.
In a statement Assistant Corps Marshal Corps Public Education Officer Federal Road Safety Corps Headquarters, Abuja Olusegun Ogungbemide said the Corps Marshal made the call during his end-of-year traffic monitoring visit to key highways on December 22, 2024.
The Corps Marshal met with His Imperial Majesty Oba (Dr.) Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, the Olowo of Owo and Paramount Ruler of Owo Kingdom, in Ondo State.
The monitoring exercise, which covered the Abuja-Lokoja expressway, Obajana, and Owo, was aimed at assessing traffic conditions on major corridors.
Mohammed highlighted the strategic importance of Owo as a vital connection between Nigeria’s South-West, South-South, and North-Central regions. He emphasized that traditional leaders, with their significant influence and trust within their communities, are well-positioned to promote road safety awareness and compliance with traffic laws.
The FRSC’s collaboration with traditional institutions is part of a broader initiative to reduce road crashes and fatalities. Through their involvement, the Corps aims to spread awareness about the dangers of speeding, the importance of vehicle maintenance, and adherence to traffic regulations.
In addition to engaging traditional rulers, the Corps Marshal called on transport unions and commuters to actively contribute to road safety.
He urged passengers to speak out against reckless driving and emphasized that transport unions must discourage overloading and prevent driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
This partnership with traditional rulers underscores the FRSC’s commitment to community-driven efforts that complement governmental policies and enforcement measures.
The Corps also pledged to continue public enlightenment campaigns, research, and other strategies to ensure safer roads in Nigeria.
