The High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Pretoria has issued an advisory in light of potential tensions surrounding the 2024 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final match between the Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana scheduled for Wednesday, 7th February 2024.
The advisory followed online comments made by a segment of South African citizens, displaying sentiments that could potentially escalate into tensions between communities.
The remarks, largely influenced by the upcoming football match, include veiled threats against “Nigerians cooking jollof rice” and warnings of “showing pepper to Nigerians if the Bafana Bafana lose to the Super Eagles.”
In response to these developments, the High Commission urged the Nigerian community in South Africa to exercise caution in their actions and statements.
Specifically, it advised individuals to be vigilant about their comments, choose their viewing locations carefully—especially in public spaces—and avoid engaging in loud, riotous, or provocative celebrations in the event of a Super Eagles victory.

It encouraged all members of the Nigerian community to abide by the law before, during, and after the match.
In the event of any provocations, the High Commission advised against retaliation but urged individuals to report such incidents to the appropriate authorities.
