The European Union condemned the attack on the Kakhovka dam in Ukraine “in the strongest possible terms,” a statement published on Tuesday said.
“The downstream flooding is putting at risk the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians,” it read.
The statement said that dropping water levels could affect access to cooling water for the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, calling the destruction “irresponsible and completely unaccaptable.”
EU emergency response coordinators are in contact with their Ukrainian counterparts, the statement added.
“Should Ukraine request assistance, the EU stands ready to address any immediate needs, including food and drinking water.” (dpa/NAN)
