EU launches €60m health, social protection projects in Sokoto

The European Union (EU), in collaboration with the United Nations and the Federal Government of Nigeria, has officially launched three major development projects valued at €60 million in Sokoto State.

The initiatives aim to bolster healthcare services, social protection systems, and community resilience across Nigeria.

The launch ceremony, held at the Sokoto State Government House, featured a high-level EU delegation led by Ambassador Samuela Isopi and included ambassadors from Sweden, Portugal, Poland, Spain, Finland, Belgium, Denmark, and Germany.

Representing Governor Ahmed Aliyu at the event, Sokoto State Deputy Governor Idris Gobir announced the projects to be implemented in the state: Strengthening Access to Reproductive and Adolescent Health (SARAH), Supporting Sustainable Social Protection Systems in Nigeria (SUSI), Support for Protection, Assistance, and Durable Solutions

“These initiatives are not only timely but also align perfectly with our government’s 9-Point Smart Innovative Agenda, especially in healthcare, social welfare, and protection of the vulnerable,” said Gobir.

Key development partners present included UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Cristian Munduate; ILO Country Director, Dr. Vanessa Phala; UNFPA Resident Representative, Dr. Gifty Addico; and Country Director of the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), Pierre Mendiharat.

Spanning 2024 to 2027, the €60 million programmes are focused on addressing critical challenges facing millions in underserved and vulnerable communities.

EU Ambassador, Mignor, reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to inclusivity and sustainable development: m“The EU is proud to invest in Nigeria’s future through programmes that leave no one behind—be it healthcare, livelihoods, or social protection.”

UNICEF’s Cristian Munduate emphasized the need for resilience and system strengthening, highlighting that the SARAH initiative will improve healthcare access for women and girls, while SUSI will support poverty reduction and inclusive development.

DRC’s Mendiharat underscored the community-driven nature of the interventions, stating that local priorities would guide action plans to ensure lasting, inclusive solutions.

The EU delegation also paid a courtesy visit to the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, where they discussed the Sultanate Council’s key role in humanitarian efforts.

The Sultan lauded the EU’s commitment and assured the Council’s cooperation for the successful implementation of the projects.

“This high-level visit sends a clear message to those who misrepresent Nigeria—we are a country moving forward, with international partners who believe in our progress,” the Sultan said.
