A self-styled native doctor and his wife are facing EFCC prosecution for an alleged N1.1 billion road contract fraud.

The Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC arraigned Olorunbukunmi Taiwo and Awolegan Omolola Omotola before Justice Abubakar Usman of the Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

–The EFCC charges–

The couple face six counts bordering on obtaining money by false pretence and retention of proceeds of crime, contrary to Section 17(a) of the EFCC Establishment Act 2004.

Count 2 reads: Between January 2024 and November 2025, they allegedly “with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of N1,098,961,500 from one Anazia Colina Kenechukwu… by falsely representing that same would be used to execute a road construction contract awarded to you by the Delta State Oil Producing Area Development Commission DESOPADEC, a pretence you knew to be false.”

Offence under Section 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006, is punishable under Section 1(3).

–How EFCC says it happened–

EFCC told the court a widow, Anazia Colina Kenechukwu, proprietor of a private school in Delta State, petitioned the Commission.

She alleged Taiwo approached her to finance a DESOPADEC road contract supposedly awarded to him.

She claimed a total of N1,980,000,000 was paid into Taiwo’s Access Bank account, 0027303340.

EFCC investigation focused on N1.098b.

–Properties seized–

EFCC said investigations revealed the couple invested proceeds in two Ado-Ekiti properties:
1. Town Tavern Lounge, 1 Ikere Road, off Florence Court School, Ado-Ekiti
2. Four-bedroom bungalow, Florence Court, Irewolede Estate, Ado-Ekiti

On May 25, 2026, the Commission secured an interim attachment of both properties.

–Court proceedings–

1. Plea: Charge read. Both defendants pleaded not guilty.
2. Prosecution: EFCC counsel Sesan Ola asked for trial date and remand.
3. Ruling: Justice Usman adjourned till June 11, 2026 for bail hearing and trial commencement. Ordered remand in EFCC holding facility.

All accused persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court.

Contract scams using “agency awarded contract” claims are a recurring EFCC case type. This one stands out due to the amount and asset attachment and “native doctor” profile.
