The passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari [GCFR] is a significant loss to Nigeria. I had the privilege to serve him as Minister of State in two strategic Ministries – first in Power, Works and Housing and later in the Ministry of Agriculture until he exited the highest office of this Nation on May 29, 2023.

For all of us who served in his cabinet, he became a role model and a shining example of true leadership worthy of emulation. To be clear, he was a rare gift to the country and indeed Africa. The country will sorely miss his wise counsel among the Committee of Statesmen.

He believed that power was from our creator. This belief aptly defined who he was. His humble background, defined by his humility and integrity, made him a unique leader. His two-term tenure as a democractically elected president was a demonstration of honesty, integrity, and deep commitment to democracy. He worked hard to stabilise the democratic institutions in Nigeria.

He was also very much committed to the promotion of peace, stability, and progress of the country. This legacy will surely endure. He was passionate about building a corrupt-free nation and was undetered by negative comments on his approach to achieve his goal. He navigated the country through complex challenges, fostering a renewed sense of hope and optimism for a better tomorrow and a greater country. He set a standard for good governance by demonstrating remarkable strength, wisdom, and compassion in the decisions he took.

Indeed, his tenure saw significant strides in infrastructure, agriculture, and social welfare, impacting the lives of millions.

His memory will endure as a champion of democracy, a unifying force, and a servant-leader who put the nation’s interests above all else.

May his legacy continue to inspire future generations of leaders and Nigerians alike.

Adieu, the peoples’ president!

Hon. Mustapha Baba Shehuri, CON
Former Minister of State Power, Works and Housing, as well as Minister of State, Agriculture
