Several Nigerian soldiers are feared dead following a deadly attack by Boko Haram terrorists on a military base in Borno State.

The assault occurred on Saturday night at the 153 Task Force Battalion in Marte Local Government Area, resulting in the dislodgement of troops and the loss of military assets.

According to military sources, the insurgents overran the base, burned down armored tanks, and looted ammunition.

“here was another Boko Haram dislodgement in Marte 153 TF Battalion on Saturday night. So many of our men are feared dead as we have lost communication with the base since the attack,” the source said.

The 153 Battalion has previously seen intense engagements with Boko Haram, particularly in the strategic town of Marte, which has changed hands multiple times over the years.

This latest incident comes just weeks after another deadly ambush in Malam-Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area, where 22 soldiers, including a commander, were killed.

Nigeria has been battling Boko Haram and its offshoots for over a decade. The insurgency, which began in earnest in 2009, has led to the deaths of tens of thousands and the displacement of millions in the northeastern region.

Despite government claims of victories, the insurgents continue to launch attacks on military and civilian targets.

Groups like the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a Boko Haram splinter faction, have intensified the conflict, further complicating military operations.

The crisis remains one of the world’s most severe humanitarian emergencies, with thousands living in overcrowded IDP camps and facing chronic insecurity, food shortages, and inadequate healthcare.

Efforts by the Nigerian military, backed by regional and international allies through the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), have yet to bring lasting peace to the region.
