• Reaffirms commitment to waterways safety, rescue efforts
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has ordered an immediate investigation into the tragic boat mishap that occurred on November 29, 2024, on the Dambo-Ebuchi waterways of the River Niger in Kupa Local Government Area, Kogi State.
In a statement, Force Public Relations Officer Force Headquarters, Abuja ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the accident involved over 160 passengers, with 24 rescued while many remain unaccounted for.
On behalf of the Nigeria Police Force, the IGP extended condolences to the Government and people of Kogi State, particularly the affected families.
He said to determine the cause of the incident and prevent future occurrences, the IGP had tasked the Force Marine Officer with leading a comprehensive inquiry.
The investigation will focus on identifying contributing factors and enhancing water transport safety and emergency response systems nationwide.
The IGP assured Kogi residents and Nigerians of the Police Force’s dedication to coordinating with relevant agencies for the swift rescue of missing passengers.
Resources and operational plans have been activated to intensify search and rescue operations.
In addition, the IGP urged waterway operators, boat owners, and stakeholders to collaborate with the Force Marine Department in implementing and enforcing critical safety measures to safeguard passengers and crew members.
The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to ensuring justice for the victims, enhancing safety on the nation’s waterways, and mitigating future risks through proactive measures and strengthened partnerships.
