The Police authorities have confirmed commencement of disciplinary measures against Corporal Opeyemi Kadiri, with ID number 509745, and another operative for publicly assaulting a young man in Lagos.

The incident, which was captured in a video that had since gone viral, took place at a checkpoint on one of the roads that was not indicated in the video.

THE CONCLAVE had reported that Corporal Kadiri seized the mobile phone of an innocent male citizen at a checkpoint and was searching through the contents.

The young male citizen was heard ceaselessly protesting the policeman’s action, which he said was contrary to the directive by the Inspector General of Police that policemen should no longer seize and peruse the contents of citizens’ phones on the roads and public places.

The policeman had threatened to break the phone as the young male citizen continued to protest.

THE CONCLAVE learnt on Sunday that the viral video had already caught the attention of Police authorities, which promptly directed Corporal Kadiri’s arrest.

An authoritative source close to the development had hinted THE CONCLAVE that action was being taken on the matter.

“I can confirm the officer has now been arrested. He is attached to Dolphin Police Station, Lagos.

“The DPO has been instructed to escort him to FHQ Abuja for commencement of his disciplinary procedure, outcome of which will be made public,” the source said.

The Police spokesperson in Lagos, Benjamin Hundeyin, a Superintendent, has now confirmed that the police authorities have taken in the police operatives involved in the assault.

Hundeyin said via twitter: “The officers reported today. They have been handed over to the Provost for disciplinary action, pending their transfer to FHQ Abuja for further disciplinary measures. The video clearly shows assault on the part of the officer(s).”
