The National Youth Leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Eze-Onyebuchi Chukwu, says the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) would have remained a “glorified village” without the interventions of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

Chukwu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday that AMAC, which houses the seat of power, the National Assembly and the diplomatic community, should rank among the best metropolitan councils globally.

The APGA youth leader, who is also an aspirant for AMAC Chairman, said “without the projects and interventions of the FCT Minister, AMAC would today be nothing more than a glorified village”.

He said the council faced challenges ranging from poor infrastructure, lack of modern public utilities, dilapidated primary schools, unhealthy health centres, poor waste management, insecurity and inadequate amenities such as water and connecting roads.

Chukwu, who is also Co-Chairman of the Forum of National Youth Leaders of All Political Parties in Nigeria (FNYLPPN), said AMAC ought to be the symbol of modern governance at grassroots level.

“Here in Abuja, the capital of Africa’s largest economy, the story is one of neglect and underperformance. This is why I have stepped forward,” he said.

“My mission is clear: to transform AMAC into the pride of Nigeria and among the best run metropolitan councils in the world,” he added.

Chukwu stressed that residents of AMAC deserved better, noting that the council must become a model of efficient local government administration in Nigeria.

He said the council had the potential to be Nigeria’s smartest metropolitan hub but continued to lag behind in infrastructure, waste management, social services and security.

“AMAC has become a ranch, a safe haven for breeding livestock. This is unacceptable for the heartbeat of the Federal Capital Territory of the giant of Africa,” he said.

“My vision is to turn AMAC into a modern metropolitan hub that reflects the dignity of Nigeria’s capital city,” Chukwu added.
