Amnesty International on Wednesday applauded the lifting of Twitter ban by the Nigerian authorities.

The unbanning of Twitter operations in Nigerua came after seven months of depriving Nigerians of exercising their right to freedom of expression on a social media platform that facilitates dialogue and empowers everyone to communicate, hold useful debates and conversations, and demand accountability from the Nigerian authorities.

While reacting to the Federal Government’s decision, the International human rights group said the Twitter ban was illegal in the first place and an attack on the right to freedom of expression, including online, access to information and media freedom.

The group said Nigerian authorities must end all acts that violate rights to freedom of expression, access to information, and freedom of the press.

Announcing the suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria, the Director General National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Mallam Kashifu Inuwa, said President Muhammadu Buhari gave the approval in a public statement released on Wednesday 12th January 2022.
