Amnesty International has issued a plea to Nigerian authorities to thoroughly investigate the unfortunate demise of Abdullahi Tukur Abba, a 17-year-old senior secondary student.
It is alleged that he suffered severe torture in the hands of security operatives associated with Operation Farauta in Yola, Adamawa state.
In a disheartening turn of events, the security task force known as Operation Farauta, established in Adamawa state to combat thuggery, robbery, and banditry, has been implicated in acts of torture and extortion against individuals under their custody.
This task force has also overstepped its mandate by delving into civil matters, a behaviour that runs contrary to its intended purpose.
According to Amnesty International, Abdullahi Tukur Abba was apprehended by Farauta security task force operatives on the 5th of August, following a complaint from a neighbour regarding a missing mobile phone.
Tragically, during his time in the custody of this task force, he was subjected to torturous treatment.
Regrettably, Abdullahi Tukur Abba’s life was cut short, as he passed away shortly after being admitted to the hospital.
Amnesty International expressed on the absence of judicial or any other protective mechanisms in Adamawa state that could prevent the Farauta task force from infringing upon the human rights of vulnerable individuals.
This distressing situation demands immediate resolution.
Amnesty International added that it is imperative that a comprehensive investigation takes place, holding those responsible for the mistreatment and tragic demise of Abdullahi Tukur Abba accountable.
Furthermore, measures must be instituted to ensure that Operation Farauta operates within the bounds of the law and respects the fundamental rights of all individuals, putting an end to these reprehensible violations in Adamawa state.
