Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has voiced deep concerns over the way Nigerians are treated abroad.

He cited a personal experience as exemplifying the country’s declining global image.

Speaking during a celebration of his 60th birthday, Amaechi said that he was recently detained by authorities in German.

He said it was not because he violated any law, but solely because of the Nigerian passport he was carrying.

According to Amaechi, the German officials questioned him and asked to see his return ticket, which he provided.

Nevertheless, he said that they kept him waiting for half an hour.

“It was embarrassing,” he said.

“I had done nothing wrong. I was just going for a check-up, but they held me back because I had a Nigerian passport.”

He lamented that such treatment reflected the broader issues affecting Nigeria, including poor leadership and widespread insecurity.

Amaechi stressed that the disrespect Nigerians faced abroad mirrored the internal decay in the country.

He urged a renewed focus on governance and reforms that can restore dignity and improve Nigeria’s reputation internationally.
