Minister of State, Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Prince Clem Ikanade Agba, has promised to help reconstruct the Jattu market after a thorough inspection of the extent of damage that has hit the market.
Jattu Market is the biggest weekly market in Afamai land and one of the largest in Edo State and the South-South region located in the heart of the town, Jattu.
It is more than a basic market where traditional food items, cultural ornaments and modern goods and services are sold.
The market, which was established over seven decades ago, attracts traders from various regions.
Although despite the huge attraction it gets, the market had in recent years been subjected to mismanagement.
The Minister expressed disappointment that the Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, who is not only from Etsako North but Jattu town, would allow the market to go into such a deplorable state.
He pointed out that the market needed an urgent facelift in order to raise the hope of the people of Afenmai and the South-South in general.
Agba added that his ministry had decided to reconstruct the market, which was shut down for political reasons, to meet global standards.
He said rehabilitation works for Jattu Market had been included in the 2023 budget.
He said: āSince those who ought to salvage the situation have chosen to look elsewhere, the federal government has taken it upon itself to lead the way.ā
Addressing elders, kinsmen and women, and political associates in the Uzanu community in Etsako East Local Government during the festive period, he explained that good leadership must first be felt at the home of leaders, adding that “charity begins at home.”
According to him, the rehabilitation will include the provisions of clean borehole water, modern toilet facilities, effective garbage disposal facilities, and erosion control among others.
“The remodelling construction work will also include standard shops,” he added.
The Minister advised elected elders to always put the interest of the ruled above personal sentiments. (Stars and Style)
