The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, in the 2023 elections, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, has now shown a willingness to be running mate to Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential elections.

Recall that Obi reached out to Kwankwaso ahead of the 2023 presidential with a proposal for political collaboration.

Kwankwaso was requested to strengthen Obi’s presidential ticket on the Labour Party [LP] platform.

He rejected the request and insisted on running for the presidency as standard bearer of the New Nigeria Peoples Party [NNPP].

His performance in the election was dismal. He only won in Kano State, whereas Obi took the nation by surprise with his performance.

Obi significantly defeated All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu in Lagos State, his strongest political base.

Having now realised how Obi has become in national politics and the proclivity of northerners towards him, Kwankwaso, THE CONCLAVE reports, has made his moves to reopen the doors for political rapprochement between Obi and him.

Politically calculative, Kwankwaso has, however, said that there are conditions that must be met before he would accept to be the running mate to Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election.

Kwankwaso reportedly opened up on the issue in a recent viral post.

He indicated his willingness, in the post in Hausa language, to serve as the running mate to Obi in 2027.

But the post, as reported by The PUNCH, portrayed Kwankwaso as cocky and one who was⁹ consumed by a sense of exaggerated self-importance, the kind that stalled Obi’s overture to him ahead of the 2023 presidential poll.

Kwankwaso was reported to have said: “I’m bigger than Peter Obi politically; I’m his elder brother, I’m a PhD holder; I performed better than him when I was the governor of my state.”

Regardless, he reportedly hinted that he would be willing to accept to be Obi’s running mate in 2027 presidential poll on some conditions

Read him: “I’ve no problem with deputising for Peter Obi, but only if certain conditions are met.

“We are willing to engage in discussions, provided that trust is established.”

He had yet to announce the conditions that must be precedent to his acceptance of the offer.

This is strategic and would only be discussed with Obi and his team when the time for the 2027 presidential politics and consultations begin.
