The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has cautioned the federal government against exploiting the recent coup plot allegations to intimidate opposition figures and silence dissenting voices.
The party expressed concerns that the government might use the allegations as a pretext to harass opposition members, suppress dissent, and manipulate public opinion.
In a statement, ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the party condemns any attempt to undermine Nigeria’s democratic order but is worried about the potential misuse of the allegations for political gain.
Abdullahi noted that conflicting statements from government sources, particularly the Defence Headquarters’ denial of knowledge of any coup plot, have raised questions about the credibility of the reports.

The party said it was worried that the allegations could be used to justify clampdowns or surveillance on opposition figures.
It said that the government’s silence on the matter has allowed rumours to spread unchecked, fueling suspicions of political motivation.
The ADC said it believed the government is using the coup narrative to divert attention from widespread misgovernance and curry public sympathy.
The ADC called on the government to clarify the true nature of the alleged coup and address the nation transparently if any threat truly exists. The party reiterated its commitment to defending the country’s constitution and opposing all forms of dictatorship.
