ADC accuses Tinubu’s allies of plot to undermine opposition coalition

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused key allies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of plotting to destabilise Nigeria’s growing opposition movement through intimidation and covert manipulation.

In a statement issued on Monday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC alleged that former state chairmen and executive members of the party from the North East and North West had been invited to secret meetings with top federal officials.

The party claimed the meetings were not for peacebuilding or national security, but rather to coerce or co-opt members into sabotaging the emerging opposition coalition.

“This is not politics; this is sabotage,” Abdullahi declared, warning that the covert efforts were part of a broader scheme to delegitimise the ADC’s leadership and halt its momentum as a credible alternative to the ruling party.

The party warned that the actions of government officials amounted to an assault on multiparty democracy.

“This is how one-party states emerge—through intimidation and interference,” the statement noted.

According to the ADC, “the July 1st coalition declaration and the subsequent unveiling of its renewed leadership structure on July 2nd have unsettled the ruling party.

Rather than addressing national challenges, the party claimed the administration had chosen to revert to old tactics of suppressing dissent.

“This party belongs to every Nigerian who is tired of the lies, manipulation, and hardship,” the statement read.

“We will resist any attempt to turn Nigeria into a one-party dictatorship using every democratic means available.”

The ADC also called on President Tinubu to investigate the alleged actions of his appointees and rein them in.

“The president must demonstrate his democratic credentials. If the Jonathan administration had suppressed opposition this way, the APC would not have taken power in 2015 and he would not be president today,” Abdullahi stated.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to building a strong and inclusive coalition to provide Nigerians with a viable alternative in future elections.
