INEC restores Mark, Aregbesola to ADC leadership list after Supreme Court ruling

The Independent National Electoral Commission has relisted Senator David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola as National Chairman and Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, following a Supreme Court judgement that voided orders of the Court of Appeal.

INEC on Thursday updated its portal to reflect the Mark-led National Working Committee, NWC, of the ADC.

The commission had in April deleted the names of the Mark-led NWC from its website, citing a Court of Appeal ruling. It said at the time it would not recognise any faction or monitor ADC meetings until the Federal High Court in Abuja decided the leadership dispute.

INEC added that the move was to avoid “foisting a fait accompli on the court or otherwise rendering nugatory the proceedings before the trial court.”

The Supreme Court this week ruled that the Court of Appeal erred by issuing orders after dismissing the appeal before it, and directed all factions to return to the trial court for continuation of proceedings.

With that judgement, INEC has now restored the Mark and Aregbesola-led NWC on its website. [With THISDAY report]
