Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said that voters were prohibited from going into the voting cubicle with their phones in the forthcoming general elections.

Chairman of INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, said this at the Commission’s maiden press briefing gor the general elections on Thursday.

While expressing concern about vote buying, Yakubu said he was hopeful that the vices would be dealt with.

The INEC Chairman who noted that all materials had been distributed to states said the sensitive materials were currently being delivered to local government areas, adding that the non-sensitive materials were deployed two months ago.

Yakubu reiterated that 240 polling units did not have voters, while 87 million Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) had so far been collected ahead of the upcoming general elections.

He added that the current voter register contained over 94 million voters.

He stated that the Commission would continue to clean it up with technology going forward.

The INEC chairman, while revealing that 1,642,385 polling units and collation centre agents of political parties will participate in the elections, added that staff members to be deployed in the elections have been trained.

Yakubu also disclosed that the Commission had fully recovered from the recent attacks on her facilities in some states.

According to him, the daily briefing was to update stakeholders as events unfolded ahead of and during the election.
